APICS Update

International Partner Spotlight on NZPICS
APICS would like to congratulate NZPICS, our International Associate in New Zealand, on their 30th anniversary. Much has changed since 1980, but certainly not the commitment of NZPICS to serve as a lynchpin in the Asia-Pacific region.

Many thanks to Kathy Gilroy, current NZPICS President, as well as all the other current and former staff with which we have had the pleasure of working. From the first CPIM exams in New Zealand in 1983 to the promotion of our new APICS Customer-Focused Supply Chain course in 2010, NZPICS has effectively spread APICS awareness and promoted the APICS body of knowledge. Congratulations on your milestone. We look forward to another 30 years of a great partnership!

The APICS CSCP December/January CBT Exam
Spread the word and give your chapter members the opportunity to become an APICS CSCP professional by registering for the December/January APICS CSCP CBT exam. The APICS CSCP CBT exam window is December 4-January 15, 2011.

The APICS CPIM Recertification Exam
The APICS CPIM Recertification Exam provides a unique opportunity to individuals whose APICS CPIM credentials have expired and are required to retake all five APICS CPIM exams. Instead, candidates can now renew their certifications by taking one exam.

Candidates had the opportunity to test for the APICS CPIM Recertification Exam at APICS 2010. There is still an opportunity for candidates to take the APICS CPIM Recertification exam. The exam is available through December 31, 2011.

APICS is actively marketing the exam and we hope that our partner network can also help in spreading the word to individuals who can benefit from the APICS CPIM Recertification Exam.

Visit apics.org/recertification to learn more about the program, eligibility guidelines, exam delivery, costs, application information, and study options to prepare for the exam. If you have any questions regarding the APICS CPIM Recertification Exam, please email certification@apics.org.

Best Practices

Address the issues in your communications
Below is some insight into what members have said motivates them to get involved and what deters them from renewing membership. This information was gathered from APICS new-member and exit surveys. As you review these points, compare what your chapter offers and how you communicate member benefits to your members. Be sure your services meet the top needs indicated by members and that your communications effectively overcome these challenges.

Top-three reasons prospective members decide to join APICS:

  • to further their career (this also was selected as the primary benefit of membership)
  • networking opportunities
  • educational programmingcertification savings.

Top-three reasons members decide not to renew:

  • change in career or no longer involved in the operations management or supply chain profession
  • did not receive the expected value to justify the cost of dues
  • APICS membership is too expensive.

Q&A

Q. Does APICS provide chapters with the opportunity to publicize chapter events in the APICS magazine?

A. Yes. The magazine offers free promotion of chapter seminars, top management nights, and conferences sponsored or cosponsored by APICS in every issue. Within the "APICS Report" section of the magazine, chapters can publicize upcoming events simply by submitting the necessary information to APICS magazine editorial staff. Don't miss this valuable marketing opportunity. Submit your announcements to editorial@apics.org with the following information (incomplete announcements may not receive timely publication):

  • sponsoring chapter name
  • event name
  • program date
  • location (including venue; city and state; and, if relevant, province)
  • any keynote speakers or presenters
  • an URL that provides more information
  • event contact with phone number or email address

Events that do not qualify for publication are professional development meetings, certification courses, and conferences not sponsored or cosponsored by APICS.
Please keep in mind: APICS magazine production is a lengthy and involved process. The sooner announcements are received, the better. Two to three months before publication is preferred.

Q. Ho w can we find out the current version of APICS courseware and what is the cost of upgrades?

A. For a complete list of courseware versions, go to the Instructor Center and find "APICS Courseware Versions" about halfway down the page. This document is updated annually and provides a complete listing of all courseware versions and the date in which each version was released.

We handle Instructor Kit upgrades two ways, depending on whether the course was updated (for 2011, this includes BSCM, DSP, and SMR) or re-written (for 2011, this  includes MPR and ECO).

Updated courses
The updated pages and slides are available for download through the CPIM page on the Instructor Center . Once on that page, you will need to click on the specific course for which you are looking. There will be a net-change document and the pages and slides that have been changed. You also can purchase the pages and a new slide CD for a nominal fee through the customer service department.  We will be providing stock numbers and costsif you would prefer (usually between $25 and $50 per module). Again, the update kits will be available for BSCM, DSP, and SMR)

Re-written courses
You will need a new instructor kit for the re-written courses. Any chapter, international partner, or instructor who owns a previous edition of the MPR or ECO instructor kit may purchase a new replacement instructor kit through March 31, 2011, for $150 plus shipping. We do hold to the March 31st date, so order early if you want a new kit.

As we are completing the re-write for the CPIM courses this year, we will be going into maintenance mode in 2011. We will update the courses annually, rather than re-write the courses. This means that, beginning 2012, we will only offer the update kits and will not offer replacement kits for the CPIM modules that year.

Tools of the Trade

CPIMdemoUsing Lead Generation Techniques To Increase Your Potential Customer Pool
Lead generation is a marketing term that refers to the creation or generation of prospective consumer interest or inquiry into products or services of a business. Leads can be generated for a variety of purposes: list building, e-newsletter list acquisition, or for winning customers. Lead generation is generated through search engines, direct mail, email, or telephone. (Source: Wikipedia.)

Lead generation techniques are an easy way for channel partners (chapters or international associates) to identify a group of individuals that are interested in a partner's membership offerings, education courses, or in-house training.

Free tools to generate CPIM and CSCP leads
APICS developed built an online demonstration tool for the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) Program.  The demo includes a self-assessment tool based on operations management competency models that help candidates identify strengths and weaknesses. The demo includes a data capture form to complete before accessing the demo. When a form is completed, it is forwarded to the APICS District and Chapter Services or International Services staff. The staff reviews each email and forwards to the appropriate local chapter or international partner for follow-up.

The APICS CSCP online demo captures contact data as well. Once a person completes the CSCP contact form, it is reviewed by partners at Holmes. Holmes then contacts the appropriate chapter. Channel partners benefit from both the CPIM and CSCP online lead generators, as it provides new leads without the additional work and expense of developing a new local advertising campaign.

How to use the CPIM and CSCP lead generator
Step One:
• Post the CPIM demo graphic or the CSCP demo graphic to the homepage of your chapter's website.

Step Two:
• Link the graphic to the corresponding online demo:
• CPIM online demo: http://apics.org/sitefiles/forms/cpim_demo.html
• CSCP online demo: http://www.learncscp.com/index.html
