The APICS lockbox for payments (membership applications and renewals, product sales and conference registration) in Baltimore, MD is now closed and no longer being used. Any correspondence sent to the old lockbox will be returned to the sender.
Please be sure to communicate to your members that they must update their records to reflect that APICS’ new lockbox is:
APICS P.O. Box 4050 Carol Stream, IL 60197–4050
IRS Announces 2010 Standard Mileage Rates
The Internal Revenue Service issued the 2010 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business purposes.
As of January 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups, or panel trucks) will be:
- 50 cents per mile for business miles driven
The mileage rates for 2010 reflect generally lower transportation costs compared to a year ago.
The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile.
A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) or after claiming a Section 179 deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for any vehicle used for hire or for more than four vehicles used simultaneously.
Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates.
Revenue Procedure 2009-54 contains additional details regarding the standard mileage rates.

APICS 4th Quarter 2009 Member Survey Key Findings
APICS New Member Survey
APICS launched a new member survey in September 2009 to assess the reasons why people join APICS. The results of the surveys sent in the fourth quarter 2009 are as follows: Key Findings:
- 90 responses (14 Student members, 8 E–members, 68 Professional/Academic/Don’t know members)
- Why join? To further my career (63 percent of Professional et al members, 50 of E–members) and to prepare me for my career (93 percent of Students). Respondents also indicated this as the primary benefit of their memberships.
- Chapter/local involvement would be the most helpful resource for new members.
- The top three reasons to join APICS were: to further one’s career (58%), networking opportunities (38%), and access to educational programming (36%). Word of mouth is the best method of promoting APICS with 52% of new members reporting that they heard about APICS from a colleague.
APICS Lapsed Member Exit Survey
APICS launched this survey in May 2009 aimed at discovering the reasons why lapsed APICS members were not renewing their memberships. The results of the surveys sent in the fourth quarter 2009 are as follows:
Key Findings:
- 59 responses
- Lapsed members tended not to be certified (67 percent). This was a new question this quarter.
- There was not a strong relationship between length of membership and lack of renewal.
- Top 3 reasons for lapse: APICS membership is too expensive; personal/financial reasons; did not receive the expected value to justify the cost of dues. This is consistent with previous quarters.
- Top 3 reasons for originally joining: educational opportunities, APICS certifications, and networking opportunities. This is consistent with previous quarters.
- 74 percent of respondents would recommend APICS to a colleague.
If you have any questions about these surveys or the findings, please contact memberservices@apics.org.

Instructor Development Program, TTT and LDI Update
All applicants to the Instructor Development (IDP) program must take the APICS Train the Trainer (TTT) course to qualify for the Associate level for any program within the IDP. Applicants who wish to be recognized at the Lead or Master level for any of the programs in the IDP must also have taken the APICS Learning Dynamics for Instructors (LDI).
As of January 1, 2010, only TTT and LDI courses taught or co-taught by a Lead or Master instructor (IDP Lead or Master, Instructor Training), will be recognized by the IDP program.
APICS has made several changes to the TTT and LDI sales process to ensure that TTT and LDI classes offered by chapters and districts are using recognized Lead and Master instructors to ensure class participants will be eligible for the IDP.
The sale of TTT and LDI Learner Workbooks will now be restricted to Lead and Master, Instructor Training instructors or to the chapters and districts who can show that they will be using a recognized Lead or Master instructor to teach or co-teach the class. The sale of TTT and LDI Instructor Kits will now be restricted to instructors who are Associate, Lead or Master in the Instructor Training program within the IDP. To encourage more TTT and LDI offerings and to ensure that the instructors teaching the courses all have instructor kits, we are reducing the price of the TTT and LDI Instructor Kits to $50. There is no price change on the Learner Workbooks.
The current versions of APICS Train the Trainer is v4.3 – January 2009 and the current version of APICS Learning Dynamics is v4.1 – August, 2009. If you are planning a course, you will want to make sure that the revision level of your Instructor Kit matches the level of the Learner Workbooks.
To order the Instructor kits, please contact APICS Customer Support at (800) 444-2742 or (773) 867-1777.
If you have any further questions, please e-mail at pdadmin@apics.org.
Q&A
Q. A local enterprise membership company contacted our membership vice president to add new employees to their membership. The membership officer used the enterprise membership application to make the updates, but the form asks for the APICS Company ID. Where can we find this APICS Company ID number?
A: Chapter officers with My Chapter access can find the APICS Company ID number by creating a Real Time report. You can run a complete member listing, or customize your report to list only Enterprise Members (select the Advanced Reporting Criteria). When you view your Excel report, look for the column titled Company ID Link. Once you have all of the update data you can report it on an application that you prefer or you can go to the following link for Enterprise Update forms: http://www.apics.org/Membership/Join/enterprise.htm. Use this application for both new and renewing Enterprise companies.
For additional assistance with My Chapter reporting, contact APICS District and Chapter Services at chaprel@apics.org or 800-444-2742 ext 5436.
