Best Practices
DMC Meeting Highlights Best Practices for Chapters As summer winds down and many chapters remain on hiatus, we take this opportunity to share best practices at the district level. The following details were reported at a recent District Managers Committee (DMC) meeting.
- Pacific Western District—The district hosted a successful annual leadership training in Sacramento. Eighteen chapters were represented with more than 80 attendees. Former APICS President, Keith Launchbury was the keynote presenter. The event culminated in Member Forums, providing the opportunity for attendees to connect with district staff, network with other chapter leaders, and share best practices. The forum results were shared on the district Web site. District Manager —Richard Leach, CPIM, CSCP
- Southwest District—The district has implemented a communications strategy to improve chapter communications and to introduce district-wide standard operating procedures. —District Manager, Sue Thornton, CPIM
- Terra Grande District—To improve outreach while accommodating economic challenges, Terra Grande is hosting webinars focused on chapter leadership topics. They are also scheduling local mini-meetings for the chapters in Mexico. —District Manager, Luis Barcón, CPIM, CIRM, CSCP
- Heartland District—Exceeding expectations, the district experienced membership growth in June. Webinars have also proven successful for the Heartland District. With an average attendance of 20 leaders, topics included Marketing and Selling and Membership Development. The district is hosting a membership contest for August and September. The chapter with the highest percentage of new members will receive a complimentary registration to the 2009 APICS International Conference. —District Manager, Ione Dykstra, CPIM
- Great Lakes District—The district's student case competition continues to exceed expectations. Chapters raised more than $15,000 to support the program. The Chicago Chapter presented successful lunch-time webinars, with more than 50 participants at the last webinar. The Grand Rapids Chapter hosts a three-day summer planning session at 4-H campgrounds with hotel. During the session, there is a review of chapter board responsibilities and chapter management. The Kalamazoo Chapter is planning a holiday party for nonmember companies. —District Manager, Tony Stencel
- Mid Atlantic District—To provide additional opportunities for officer development, the district is presenting a Train the Trainer (TTT) and Learning Dynamics for Instructors (LDI) training in Cleveland in October. The district is also considering offering webinars. —District Manager, Barry McBurney
- Southeast District—The district has focused on revitalizing chapters this year. The results are the merging of three south Florida chapters into one. The district staff is also focusing on succession planning in preparation for the 2010 elections. In the fall 2009, the district will launch a Chapter Officers Webinar Library that features chapter management instructional webinars. —District Manager, KC Kasserman, CPIM, CIRM, CSCP
- Canadian District—The district staff is working with the APICS professional development staff and Ontario chapters to help find sponsors and tour sites for the 2009 APICS International Conference in Toronto. The district has been subdivided into six regions to encourage chapters to work together with neighboring chapters. —District Manager, Eric Somers, CPIM, CIRM, CSCP
- Northeast District—The district plans to offer additional development opportunities at the November district meeting. Plans now include both Train the Trainer (TTT) and Learning Dynamics for Instructors (LDI). By including the training in the district meeting timeframe, chapter leaders have additional incentives to attend, while also reducing overall travel costs. —District Manager, Virginia M. Vogel-Polizzi, CFPIM
If your chapter has developed a successful courseware offering, created an innovative professional development meeting program, or identified ways to dazzle your members, please share. Send your success stories to chaprel@apics.org, subject "LC Best Practices."

Q&A
Q: Can you explain the Instructor Development Program (IDP) and what is required to qualify for the different levels?
A: The Instructor Development Program (IDP) has 3 levels:
Associate Instructor
Lead Instructor
Master Instructor
These levels can be applied to 5 different course paths:
CPIM
CSCP
Lean Enterprise Workshop
Global Sourcing Workshop
Instructor Training (TTT/LDI)
There are 15 different possible combinations of designations (i.e., for the CPIM path an individual could be an Associate CPIM, Lead CPIM, or a Master CPIM).
Any instructor could hold 5 designations at any one time.
For additional information about the IDP program, view here or visit http://www.apics.org/InstructorCenter/instructordevelopment.htm.
Q: What is the Instructor Development application process and how will my application be reviewed?
A: The APICS Review Committee will be looking for the following within the application:
- A complete application with all mandatory fields filled out.
- If applying for CPIM or CSCP, your certifications must be current.
- If applying for a designation, you must have completed (as a participant) the Train the Trainer (TTT) for an Associate designation and Learning Dynamics for Instructors (LDI) for the Lead or Master designation. Please provide when you took the courses, where you took them, and the instructor's name for each.
- If you are interested in a designation in either the Lean Enterprise Workshop or the Global Sourcing Workshop, please provide confirmation that you completed the instructor training for the course of interest.
- Provide a list of courses that you have taught in the last five years—a simple spreadsheet with course name, approximate date, location, and the number of hours that you taught each course. Note that applicants for any Masters designation must show 300 hours or more of instruction time in the last five years. If you've taught TTT or LDI in the last 10 years, add those courses, too.
- Have a sponsoring partner (APICS chapter, international associate, authorized education provider) and submit the Partner Endorsement Letter.
- Sign the APICS Code of Conduct (on application), attach a resume along with a $50 application fee, and send all to our attention at pdadmin@apics.org.
